Short blurb: We're changing our game servers, you may notice some odd behavior this week, especially in chat.
Long version: For the duration of the beta so far, we've used a set of servers to handle the game and chat that aren't quite in their final form. We aim to change that this week.
The game server, api.flamencobeagle.com, is pretty close to its final form. Namely, it implements a secure connection with the game client over https. However, it uses a self-signed ssl certificate. This is fine for the client, which has the certificate built into it, but it is causes problems when you try to connect to the game server for sharing achievements and the like. We've gotten a proper ssl certificate, and have taken the opportunity to move the game server over to its permanent home: api.ghostseedonline.com. The new game client update, due in Google Play tonight, will point to this new server.
The chat server, on the other hand, is our basic development chat server, which the game connects to via a direct IP address. We're moving this over to a permanent chat server, with a proper address. The upside of this is that we'll support connecting to the chat server over any xmpp or Jabber compatible client, so you'll be able to strategize with your organization or chat with your in-game friends from any computer. The downside of this is that you'll see some flaky behavior from your saved chat histories until you update to the new client. We're working to minimize this, but there will unfortunately be some.
You may have noticed that the forums have a proper address now. Instead of pointing to somereallylongsetofrandomcharacters.amazonaws.com, it now points to https://forums.ghostseedonline.com. How civilized! That was the first step in this series of changes. If you've got any bookmarks that point to topics with the old forum address, they'll stop working in a week or so. The easy fix is to just go to them now and re-save them. They'll be saved with the new permanent address.
As soon as this is all stable, I'll post some instructions on connecting to the chat server from outside the game. Thanks, and happy conquering!
